Crazy Japanese GLITTER! November 1, 2009

This, ladies and gentlemen, is why I so many people are excited about Japanese nailpolish:

Glitter!  Holographic awesomeness! Both in one! *faints*

009 012

Of course, I had to play with my matte topcoat:

Index: Canmake 23. Toxic green glitter. This looks also very cool over black and matte!

Middle: Perfect Nail PNN-16. Purple jelly with lots of different kinds of glitter. Great for layering as well as on it’s own – it totally rocks! Love it with a matte topcoat – it looks like a sequined party dress!

Ring: Vernis a ongles eclair – #15 Snow Dome’s Christmas Tree. It’s the best example of how crappy lighting can ruin the look of a color: When I saw it at the shop, I only  thought “Oh, what a pretty grey-green shimmer. Could be a nice winter color” , but as soon as the sun hits it, it’s a BAM! in-your-face  mint green holo! Mattyfing ruins the holo effect, but it’s still very pretty.

Pinkie: Vernis a ongles eclair – #11 Maharadja Gold dancer. Silver holo packed with gold glitter. It’s even better matte, and the glitter is quite unique to me. It really looks like little pieces of leaf gold! This is so going to be my mani for Christmas and New Years Eve ^_^

Photos of  Snow Dome’s Christmas Tree as a full mani coming up!

Mad about Matte October 27, 2009

Look what I found in at the mall:

004 012

Topcoats! I got Sally Hansen Insta Dry and Essie Matte about you, and two glitters. (Three actually, but the third one is for my Elfster girl, so I won’t spoil the surprise 😉 Just this much: it’s pink and silver and totally stunning! ) Swatches and reviews coming soon!

EDIT: OMFG! I’m wearing a mani with Insta Dry since yesterday afternoon and added a coat of Matte about You a few hours ago and my mani starts to flake off in this exact moment! Maybe it’s because I combined the two topcoats? Or maybe it’s the fact that I forgot basecoat, or the crappy but pretty dollar store polish? No idea, but the chip is huge! Looks kinda cool though, like an extravagant french tip:

Here is my first (still undamaged) matte mani: Mermaid blue/green with shimmer. Doesn’t it look totally awesome? I love that it’s not completely wallpaint-matte but still has this somehow velvety look to it. Purty!

Lol, this looks so photoshopped! xD   —  Can you see the shimmer?

See you very soon, right after redoing my nails!

5 in 1 nailpolish, including a Lippmann Ruby Red Slippers dupe (maybe) October 18, 2009

Hi guys!

Sorry for not posting for so long… Kanji (chinese characters) class started last week, so I was quite busy studying.

Today’s post is about some layering experiments, it’s inspired by the deep sea mani I did a few posts ago. This time, I used a basic tomato red instead of the blue, something between a sheer creme and a quite opaque jelly.

Here are the base colors:

From thumb to pinkie: Essence Pool Party (bright, but not neon sky blue with silver microglitter), Alessandro No. 259 (blurple with pink/green flakies), silver chrome, black base and AC mint green glitter, orange-toned yellow creme.

And here are the results, with one coat of red on each nail:

Thumb: brownish red with tiny red sparkles. Interesting, I thought this would come out like a dusty purple… Anyway, I like it. It’s very fall-like and reminds me of dried blood and teriyaki sauce. No, this combination isn’t creepy. Not at all *whistles*    😀

Index: rusty red with brighter red flakies. Not nearly as pretty as it sounds: FrankenFail!

Middle: Christmas!!! Might be a dupe for one of those countless cherry red shimmers that come out each year before holiday. Certainly not unique, but extremely pretty.

Ring: This is the one I was most excited about. It’s a dark red with bright red glitter. I used one coat of glitter here, but if you use more and a sheerer red, this will probably look a lot like Lippmann Ruby Red Slippers!

Pinkie: BRIGHT red creme. Very summery, it reminds me of red jelly beans. It looks amazingly fun with some multicolored glitter on top! This was impossible to photograph, though, but you get the picture. ^_^

I hope this was some inspiration for you to pull out your favourite colors and finishes and play! I would love to hear about what you tried and how it came out! Have lots of fun!

See you soon! ❤

Black holo japanese glitter POTD – and a new series! October 13, 2009

Hello again!

So, review first for those of you who don’t like looking at pedicure pics 😉

This polish was extremely sheer as well, so instead of using 4+ coats on my uneven toenails to get it somewhere near opaque and smooth, I just layered one coat of holo over a basic black creme. Drying time was OK, though, it didn’t take as long as expected.

So, on to the swatches:

If you don’t like ’em, don’t scroll further down than here!

Inside, artificial light, no flash. This is pretty much what it looks like outside on a cloudy day.

Theeere we go. Imagine this effect x3 and you know what happens when the sun hits my toes. This is also indoors, with flash.

Sorry I couldn’t get any sunlight photos, but I’m really busy with university now and….well, Kyoto University is the second oldest university in Japan and ranks Top 20 in every worldwide university ranking I have seen so far. Therefore, both students and teachers are extremely proud to be able to work and study here. Kinda like Yale or Cambridge or something like that, plus strong Japanese patriotism. Now imagine what they would do to a girl sitting in the entrance of one of the venerable institutes, painting her nails and taking photos of her naked feet… :/ Yes, exactly.

So probably I will only be able to post proper swatches and NOTDs like twice a week or so. There will be a new series, though, featuring funny or interesting things I discovered here. It’s starting right now! Hope you enjoy it!

This is from my Japanese lecture today. The teacher doesn’t speak english, only Japanese, so she draws little cartoons or uses gestures to explain new vocabulary. We had a lot of fun in this class^^ Can you guess what the Kanji (chinese characters) in the brackets mean?

Have a nice day!

Deep sea nails October 11, 2009

Here’s my recent NOTD:

I used the mint green glitter from the last post over a wine red creme…

…and then added two coats of the blue jelly. It is indeed very sheer, but I like it anyway. It’s blue and glossy, what’s not to love? 😀 But it seems to mess with my topcoat in some weird way, I got really bad tipwear from it. What you see above isn’t even 24h old :/

I use this layering technique a lot for making last night’s super glittery party manicure a little more SFW, or just to get a sparkly, but not in-your-face sparkly!!! look. For toning it down even more, just skip the dark base and apply the glitter to your naked nails!

I tried that with gold shimmer and a bright red jelly, it was gorgeous, but I forgot to take pictures. D’oh! It looked like lava, very red-hot and glowing. Would have been nice for halloween, too, maybe for a demon (with black Konad flames on it^^) or any fire-themed costume. Or something like a mad hollywood diva who revived from hell to take revenge on the bi*** who stole her Oscar… Speaking of scary celebrities, anyone plans to dress up as, let’s say, Paris Hilton in 20 years? Haha, I’d like that xD

Okay. Now we’re getting sidetracked. Coming up is a new pedicure, my toes are starting to hate me for not being taken care of for almost 5 days…

Mata ne!

Dollar store goodness! (and some random pics^^) October 9, 2009

Good evening!

Today I got my first bunch of japanese polishes!  I got three from a 100 yen shop and one from the drugstore. They had a quite nice color range there, including a TON of nudes (not really for me to wear, but pretty. My mum would totally love them) and the cutest bright glitters and almost-neons ever! Only thing I missed a bit were some dark, vampy shades. Probably I just looked in the wrong places.

Here is what I got:

Midtone blue by Crayon Manicure. It seems to be a jelly, but I didn’t really swatch any of them yet.

Black jelly with gorgeous holo glitter. Maybe a bit like China Glaze Cosmic?

This is the drugstore one. It’s by Noah and it seems to be a charcoal/purple kind of base color packed with tiny pink and purple glitter. Can’t wait to try this one.

More GLITTAH! This is pure green sparkly awesomeness, plus some golden hexagons that look blue in certain lights <3. It’s really sheer, so it makes a great topper. Here it is over my current NOTD, a deep burgundy creme:

And here are some other little things I already love about Japan:

Heavy metal crisps:

Green tea cappucino (does that contradict itself? oO):

Chopsticks that look like a Konad mani (and a nice one, too!):

And of course the fact that you can get a perfectly working, cute little coffee machine for only about 15$!

I think I will try the black holo as my next pedicure, so photos of that are coming soon! Maybe some nail art, too, they have these amazing Stripe Rite-like things at a drugstore near my university…

See you all soon! ❤

Alessandro VAMP LE (Fall 2009) September 18, 2009

Todays post is about the latest limited edition by Alessandro. It’s called Vamp and it’s great! There are nine colors in it: A pretty red-toned purple with pink shimmer and a bunch of cremes, I think they were a dark navy blue, dark violet, grey and two shades of berry pink.
And these three:
No 261 is a quite dark teal/purple duchrome. It doesn’t have that soap-bubble-gone-heavy-metal  kind of look that it has in the bottle, but it’s still gorgeous! It also has a little bit of teal microglitter in it, which makes it interesting. This was my pedicure for the last few days:

No 257 is the father to a furry little lemming that I got as soon as I saw this one on display. Seems like I wasn’t the only one, I had to go to about 5 different beauty shops until I got it. It’s a dirty brown jelly base packed with silver and bronze microglitter and green/blue DUOCHROME FLAKIES!!! Imagine OPI You Don’t Know Jacques as a drag queen, that’s what it looks like  *_*

No 259 looks similar to 257, but has a blue base and pink/green flakies with a stronger duochrome effect. It looks like fireworks on your nails! I like this one a tiny bit less than 257, but that’s just because I’m such a sucker for green nail polish. If you like blue and purple, this one is for you!

257 and 259 in full sunlight!

257 and 259 in full sunlight!

Don't look at my index finger, the poor little thing got cut :(

Don't look at my index finger, the poor little thing got cut 😦

The formula on all three of these is great, not too thick or too runny, spreads nicely and the glitter doesn’t clump even after 3 coats. Not that you would need that much, you can get away with two for 259 and one for 261. Only 257 was a little sheer, so I tried to layer it over black, along with 269. No comment on that, the picture speaks for itself:

"I want to be your manicure for the rest of the year!"

"I want to be your manicure for the rest of the year!"

The flakies were a pain in the you-know-where to get off, though. The rest of the polish was no problem, so in the end you would have lots of colourful flakies on your naked nails (which looked quite nice, too… maybe I will post pics of that the next time I wore them…)

Some words about the brand, because it’s not exactly popular, but has very high-quality nail products. I have seven polishes and a cuticle oil, all work really well for me, except for one polish that doesn’t suit my skintone, but that’s due to the crappy lighting in most shops here. They also make lipsticks and glosses and such, but I haven’t tried those yet. Alessandro is a german brand that works mainly in Europe, but you can get their products overseas, too. They are all Big 3 free. They don’t have a shop on their website though, which sucks. But if you can get your hands on those, I’d really recommend trying them.

Have a nice weekend and stay tuned for some music-inspired green goodness! ❤
